No tracking.
No cookies of its own.

The Factbook has no accounts, no adverts, no analytics and no tracking. It sets no cookies of its own and loads nothing from other websites: its pages, fonts and scripts all come from this site. Like any website, it cannot answer a request without your browser sending some information, and that is kept briefly in server logs.

01What the servers log

When you open a page, the server that hosts this site and Cloudflare, which sits in front of it to keep it fast and secure, record the request: your IP address, the address of the page you asked for, the time, the description your browser gives of itself, and the page you came from. The words of a search are part of the address, so they are logged too.

These logs are used only to keep the site working and secure, for example to find faults and to turn away abusive traffic. They are not used to identify or profile visitors, they are not combined with anything else, and they are kept for a short time and then deleted. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a reliable, secure website.

02Cloudflare

Cloudflare handles requests to this site on our behalf, under its own privacy policy. If it needs to check that a visitor is a person and not an automated program, it may set a strictly necessary cookie for that check.

03In your browser

The site keeps two small things in your browser, and neither is sent anywhere:

  • Whether you chose light or dark mode with the button in the header, so the next page opens the same way. It stays until you choose again or clear this site’s data.
  • Your place on a country page while it switches to another edition, so you are not sent back to the top. It is removed as soon as it has been used.

04What we do not do

We do not sell, share or publish information about visitors, use advertising or analytics services, or embed anything from social networks or other websites.

05Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask what information about you is held, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. If you are unhappy with how your information is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

To ask about your information, write to [email protected].
